When it comes to lyrics, there are many songs I don't consider to be 'good writing'. With Mzell's example, Enimem's lyrics are very rhythmic and are drenched with emotion.

Bands whose music is more abrasive to the ear typically are not thought of as 'artistic'. How well their lyrics are written is a different story though. There are many songs I enjoy, but because I enjoy and can relate to them, it doesn't mean I consider their lyrics to be 'good writing'. I consider some of my favorite songs to be have horrible lyrics (Mindless Self Indulgence is a prime example, but I love them despite their trashy lyrics). If we're going to analytical with lyrics, we have to be open-minded as well.

What I think of ICP's song, "Nothing Left"; It is ridiculously repetitive. For me, the rhyme scheme got old very fast. Many of the lines feel unnatural and forced into the rhyme pattern. I don't like the mechanics of the lyrics at all. The message and purpose is very apparent sure...but I can't help but want to lose interest while reading, or listening to the song.

* ...and just to give an idea of some things I consider to good works of lyrical writing *
*...two random songs from my library of music...*
Paul Simon - I am a Rock
Don't talk of love,
But Ive heard the words before;
Its sleeping in my memory.
I wont disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
The song is a great metaphor, and the lyrics illustrate it well.
Bon Scott - Night prowler
Too scared to turn your light out
'Cos there's something on your mind
Was that a noise outside your window?
What's that shadow on the blind?
As you lie there naked
Like a body in a tomb
Suspended animation
As I slip into your room
When reading the lyrics without music, it builds a spooky suspenseful mood.

These two examples may not be Great works of writing, but they are somewhere in the ballpark. I think for lyrics to be well-written, they need good mechanics, a good message, and need to convey emotion.

I've been told that I hold LoBD's writers up to a pretty high standard

Actually what I am thinking is that one day when one poet/writer achieves quite a huge success on writing, his or her 'frontpage' would be printed words like this ”For LoBD, cradle of my writings”。

:D Could that be one vision for LoBD in the future?
